The study takes place near the northern coast of the state of Yucatan in Mexico. From disturbed and pristine deciduous tropical forest to lowland, seasonally flooded, coastal forest, the land is either privately owned, community owned or government managed.

The results of Hurricane Wilma in October, 2005, deeply impact the 2006 study season. Flooding which lasted through February, and toppled trees and other vegetation prevented placement of any cameras until May. The map below illustrates that the study area is greatly reduced by inaccessibility to sites utilized in 2005.

As trails are reopened, additional pairs of cameras will be placed in the field.
